Focus SDG

Climate Action - focuses on taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, aiming to limit and adapt to the effects of a changing climate.

Source Reliability

The statistic about New Zealand's rivers being in poor ecological condition comes from the Our Freshwater 2020 report co-published by Stats NZ and the Ministry for the Environment. This report provides detailed insights into the state of freshwater in New Zealand, including the pressures and impacts contributing to its condition. It is a reliable source, as it is based on comprehensive environmental data and analysis conducted by reputable government agencies.

Chosen Statistic

Approximately 58% of New Zealand's river length is classified as being in poor ecological condition due to agricultural runoff, urbanization, and pollution.

Iterative Sketch

Feedback from Peers

The first and second concepts were the most selected, leading to the decision to integrate both. The focus then shifted to exploring ways to merge these concepts into a cohesive final GIF design. I then began developing six high-quality iterative studies, aiming to integrate both concepts selected based on previous feedback.

6 high-quality iterative studies

Among the six high-quality iterative studies, the second option stood out based on feedback received from peers.

Final Idea Development Process

The initial test involved a single mini square moving toward the top right corner. Once the first round of code completed, a larger square appeared in the same location, representing the beginning of a pollution buildup process.

Based on feedback, I attempted to introduce multiple mini squares that spawned randomly and moved toward the top right corner. However, this led to a bug where the larger square kept flashing—disappearing and reappearing between each round of code execution.

After resolving the flashing issue, I implemented a background color shift that darkened with each round, aligning with the first concept’s approach to representing pollution stages.

Final GIF

Lastly, I experimented with the shape of the larger square, modifying it to change form when the animation concluded.
