100Des - Define phase

DESIGN 100 Define Brief: Designers must discover and define the initial problem then design & deliver a prototype that solves the problem.

Classifying Findings

We started the process by brainstorming a plan. We brainstormed patterns, surprises, curiosity, contradictions, tensions, who we met..., what was interesting to learn... and if a change will make a difference... these were categorised into six parts. Doing this allowed us to discover new problems that were not found in the previous discovery process; seeing the problem from a different perspective allowed us to start a deeper discussion.

BRAINSTORM

We found patterns that most people do not go to the gym because they didn't know how to use the gym equipment; they could not hire personal gym trainers as they were quite expensive—also going all mentioned that it is too time-consuming. The people who go to the gym tend to have a specific time to work out. Through research, most of these people would go to the gym at least 4-5 times a week to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

It was surprising that the non-gymers preferred to stay home and play games or do other activities than go to the gym to work out; the other non-gymers did not feel the need to work out. It was curious to realise that people are more likely to go to the gym if others in their social circle do. Another example, people who do not go to the gym tend to have friends or family members around them who play games or have other hobbies.

We found a contradiction which was hiring a personal gym trainer is the easiest way to learn how to the gym equipment safely, but personal trainers can be quite expensive; this is unbeneficial for many people.

We met university students and young workers who used to go to the gym; their initial problem for not going to the gym includes personal gym trainers being too expensive. Going to the gym 4-5 times per week is too time-consuming.

How Might We

Listing 9 "How might we" statements allowed us to exclude solutions that are insufficient.

HOW MIGHT WE STATEMENTS

1.)  how might we provide affordable gym equipment lessons to people.
2.)  how might we lead more people to go to the gym.
3.)  how might we make working out at the gym be more user friendly for introverts.
4.)  how might we help those who wish to start working out at the gym spend less money.
5.)  how might we provide a resource to change the thought of (going to the gym is just for health and most of the time it is boring)
6.)  how might we provide a resource to attract non-gymmers.
7.)  how might we provide a affordable service that helps to calculate; recommend work out and diet plans for people.
8.)  how might we make working out fun
9.)  how might we let more gym newbies learn how to work out safely.

On reflection, we decided to define further "7.)  how might we provide an affordable service that helps calculate; recommend work out and diet plans for people." Number 7 has been chosen as our final statement as this problem tends to be the overall primary problem. Therefore we will explore more profound in this area.

Mind Map

Completing a mindmap allowed me to define "how might we provide a website that helps to calculate; recommended workout and diet plans for tertiary students?" It allowed me to explore this statement in better depth. I started the process by creating five categories: time, gymer, non-gymer, personal gym trainer, and gym newbie. Then I explored more profound into the primary connections; the problems differed from person to person depending on what category they are in. I realised that mindmaps visually organised issues, actors, and their relationships, making it much easier to identify the problems.

AEIOU Framework

To create the AEIOU framework, I first went to the gym and then categorised the information into the following order: activities, environment, interaction, object and users. Doing this allowed me to interpret observations gathered; helps address the client's issues.

In-Person Examination Process

Jun-seo's workout plan.

For this assignment, I went to the gym with Jun-seo Heo; the following will be about what we discovered. Firstly we took a few pictures of the machines, then we asked for general information such as membership plans, what equipment is available, how is their gym staffed and so on.

Aerobic exercise (10 minutes)>Muscular exercise (30 minutes)>Aerobic exercise (20 minutes)

Muscular legs exercise twice a week.
Arm exercise twice a week and lastly hip up.

Questions asked

How much does a membership cost?

Are all clubs open 24hr? How are they staffed?

What gym equipment is available here?

Do members have to bring their club cards every time?

There are 3 options available; basic membership ($6.99 per week), black Card membership ($13.99 per week) or premium membership ($16.99 per week) There is an additional joining fee which is $49

Staff hours on normal days are 5:30 am to 10 pm, club hours are open 24 hours; staffed hours for public holidays are 7 am to 7 pm, apart from Christmas and easter

the club features 30+ pieces of cardio equipment, selectorized strength equipment, which is a changeable level of resistance, and a large free weight area (2.25kg to 50kg dumbbells).

Yes, if the member or their friends do not have the membership card they will not be allowed entry to the gym.

Overall the experience was quite embarrassing and also entertaining at the same time as I had someone coming with me, allowing me to avoid drowning in shyness and allowing me to complete the process without hesitating.

Final Conclusion

These activities allowed me to define the difficulties or reasons for gymers, non-gymers and newbie gym students. I discovered two main reasons beginner gym students have: personal trainers are too expensive for territory students. There is no other solution other than hiring a personal trainer to learn how to use gym equipment safely; beginners need workout and diet plan advice from professionals.

After all the investigation, brainstorming, and mind maps, we narrowed the statements into one final HMW statement below to take to the next design phase.

"How might we provide a gym tutorial website that helps guide how to use gym equipment; advises the type of workouts and suitable diet plans for every individual tertiary student according to their body type to their desired body shape?"

We have combined two statements from the HMW list because these two statements fit truly well together. Creating a trustworthy tutorial website will benefit many territory students who would like to start heading to the gym but are unwilling to spend money on fitness instructors.
